What did you do to the ice after Christmas? Keep doing what you are doing, we love our Ice here in Castlegar.
The ice is harder and nicer to skate on. It’s fast and feels more stable. I am able to concentrate on the jump itself and not so much on our speed.
While we normally prefer to see a full year of data first, to account for temperature changes and operational variables, we have seen results that align with estimated savings by Florian at REALice. The last three months of data show that we are on track for an annual savings of 90,000 kWh and that we are currently exceeding the anticipated natural gas savings of 900GJ per year. This translates into $18,000 in annual savings and a 2 year payback.
In Williams Lake we have very hard and mineralized water and we have found that the ice is as good as before the Real Ice installation if not better. We have also noticed our ice stays much clearer than before. We flood with 57-60 degree F water and have not had any problems at all since the system was installed. The cost savings on our utilities is also quite noticeably better and this is a big positive when you deal with your politicians or directors.

I skate Wednesday night at the Complex Arena in Castlegar and the ice looks great. It feels hard and durable.
Our compressors are running approx. 25% less and the load on the hot water boilers is down over 50%. With this, we estimate on the Hydro side alone over 87'000 kWh in savings during the 7 months operations period.
At the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation, we are working towards lower energy consumption, a cleaner environment, and better and safer ice. All this is available using the REALice System.

We have been using the Watreco Real Ice System for over 2 years. We have been collecting data for all of the 2 years plus prior to the installation. The system has been saving us over $1,500 per month. Because the refrigeration temperature can run about 3 degrees F higher, there is less wear and tear on the compressors and pumps. Since we flood and resurface with cold water there is less humidity and the dehumidifiers work less and there is less rusting on the metal beams. The ice is harder. Players skate faster, pass better and shoot better. It contributes to a better quality hockey game. All visiting coaches and players agree that it is one of the best surfaces in the country to play on. We are in operation 12 months a year and the savings is definitely significant.
At the Swedish Figure Skating Federation, we feel that the REALice System provides our users with improved ice as it is more stable and faster. The lower energy consumption is also beneficial as it provides a cleaner environment.
Our staff and users are completely satisfied with the switch, in fact if we hadn’t told users about it they wouldn’t even have noticed the change. On top of that, we are already seeing reductions in our gas and electricity usage.

We are very pleased with the results of the REALice system thus far. The users have reported very hard, consistent, and fast ice. The ice also looks very clear and has a nice sheen to it.
We have been very impressed with the product for the short time we have had it. The quality of the ice has been tremendous. We are fine tuning the surface temp when the arena is full and the heaters are on in the stands. We are running our compressors about 25% less. Our gas reduction is down significantly because we are not heating our water to resurface the ice. I would give a ballpark estimate in savings of about $1,200 - $1,500/month.
Having worked with artificially frozen ice for over 30 years, it really feels like the REALice System has revolutionized ice production. We have obtained a tool and a method of working that enables us to create improved ice for our users. The ice is considerably harder, which means that it is more durable and provides improved skating. People even come up to us spontaneously and wonder what we have done to the ice to make it so good, and that’s nice. Additionally, we can lay ice by adding water that’s not as hot and freezes faster, and we can use a higher ice temperature while running, saving on energy, money, and compressors. Another beneficial effect is that the ice has become clearer, something appreciated not least by our sponsors.
I’m happily surprised because it works. My compressors never run! I'm getting notes from my staff -- the compressors aren't running any more. I can't wait to see my next hydro bill.
